Bristol Periodontist (Gum Diseases) Services
We see preventing dental diseases as a fundamental part of our work here at High Street Dental Clinic. We’re here to help you maintain excellent gum health through regular hygiene sessions.
Gum Disease
There are two main types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Gingivitis
Almost all adults will experience gingivitis to some extent during their lifetime. It is a mild form of gum disease caused when plaque builds up along the gum line as a result of poor oral hygiene. Gingivitis is characterised by red, inflamed gums and bleeding when you brush your teeth. Our hygienists provide treatment for bleeding gums and it’s important to get gingivitis treated before it has chance to develop into periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease
When gingivitis isn’t treated, it can develop into a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontal disease. This is the primary reason for tooth loss in UK adults. With periodontal disease, the bacterial infection spreads to the periodontal tissues, which support the teeth. Over time, this causes the bone supporting the teeth to weaken, leading to eventual tooth loss.
Oral health and smoking
If you smoke, you have a higher chance of suffering from severe gum disease. Smoking has an adverse effect on the healing process because it reduces oxygen in the bloodstream, so any infections in the gums will health much slower than they should.
